Organic cosmetics according to Austria LM-Codex

The demand for natural and organic cosmetics has been increasing for years. For more and more consumers, caring for their skin and hair is also part of a sustainable and responsible lifestyle. However, the veritable jungle of seals does not necessarily make it easy for consumers to distinguish real organic cosmetics from "greenwashing" products.

With the Organic Production Directive, section Organic Cosmetics, Austria is playing an important pioneering role in the EU and is offering a legal framework for the production and labeling of organic cosmetics for the first time.

Other countries continue to only offer standards under private law, which should be mentioned on the respective product. Due to the lack of legal requirements (such as those that exist for food throughout the EU), the consumer can only be certain of which standard is used in the production of the respective product via the labeling information on the packaging. Organic cosmetics, without a clear indication of the standard according to which they were certified, do not give the consumer any security that compliance with private law or legal requirements has been checked by an independent control body!

The organic production guideline, organic cosmetics section, is one of the strictest standards for organic cosmetics and is only checked by accredited control bodies.
You can recognize organic cosmetics that have been certified according to this standard by a corresponding indication on the product:
• The ingredients list (INCI) indicates which ingredients are organic.
• The code number and/or the name of the competent control body is indicated on the container and/or packaging. We offer the manufacturer our organic label for this (free for customers of the Austria Bio Garantie!).
• The production standard must be clearly indicated. The exact wording is specified here in the guideline, e.g. "manufactured in accordance with the guideline for organic production, section organic cosmetics".
